a triptych that was inspired by the shapes I found within the original canvas wash, built upon layer by layer, to draw allusion to the trinity of womanhood and the cycles of the human body as it performs miracles upon the earth.

this series explores the metaphorical opening of Pandora’s box, here represented by the gun inscribed with SPES VLTIMA MANET- hope waits here. while difficult to make out in the photographs, beneath the background layers are written the names of major wars, campaigns and battles as well as school shootings; mass casualties and lives wiped out en masse upon the invention of the gun, evils unleashed from Pandora’s box that cannot be undone or leashed.

part of the metamorphoses series, this painting reinterprets the myth of Daphne, who begs the gods to save her from the unwanted advances of Apollo. they do, transforming her into the laurel tree to protect her chastity and her wishes. most depictions focus on the action of the rape, the abduction by Apollo, but I wanted to forefront the experience of the woman, the victim of sexual violence, by focusing on the moment of her transformation and her response.

part of the metamorphoses series, this painting captures the moment that Agamemnon, lord of the Greeks and bound by oath familial and political, sacrifices his firstborn child, Iphigenia, to allow the Greek fleet to sail to Troy. certain ancient authors tell of the transformation from Iphigenia to deer upon the altar, with the young girl saved at the last moment by the goddess who had condemned her. this piece captures that moment in time, as the fire is lit upon the altar and the virgin’s blood has only just been spilt, stoic in the face of her demise for father, king, and country.
